My Feudal Lord
(Tehmina Durrani)
My Feudal Lord It?s a strange world, where a woman?s beauty, her unparalleled sacrifices and her flower thin sensitivity is crowned but when she tries to outgrow her pain, anguish and wants to break the stone carved value system, she is brutally and vehemently cut by her throat so that the pain she has suffered is freed in a jiffy. Even the pain could not justify her existence. My Feudal Lord is a story of a woman Tehmina Durrani who outstrips all the barriers to get married to Mustafa khar, a leading name and an active participant in Pakistani politics. The very much-married Tehmina falls in love with the exuberant and vibrant personality of Mustafa khar, who is the protégé of Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and wants to establish a niche for himself in the political cloud. He has enormous dreams for the development of Pakistan that embolden him to make clandestine visits to India to meet the prime minister. Tehmina Durrani is gardened by the very optimism of Mustafa khar and releases herself from her first marriage to Anees and her daughter Tanya from the first wedlock. The marriage begins with rays of sunlight eclipsing their life with love and the darkness of the night serving as a unstitched cloth being needled to prick their skins so that it never tears apart. But this darkness is torn by the insolent behavior of Mustafa khar who wants every stone to be turned his way. He walks away with impunity leaving Tehmina to suffer and then forgive him for his impertinence. She sticks to him in thick and thin, the sojourn starting from leaving Pakistan after the military rule is imposed by gen. Zia and they are forced to live in exile. They move to London and Tehmina gives birth to 4 children. Nevertheless, the shackled marriage leaves her crestfallen, feeling of remorse insinuating deep inside her and predisposes her to fall back on anti-depressants for keeping the serotinin level adequate. She is required to live with her nakedness being owled by Mustafa khar and submits herself to that barbarian every night. The scars on her face painted by her husband are waterproof colors and she knows that these colors would ridicule her for the incorrigible decision taken of marrying Mustafa khar. Her visits to Mecca in Saudi Arabia and shrine in Ajmer gave her the indelible strength to cope with the adversity. Moreover, her husband?s repeated illegimate liaison with her younger sister Adila kept her feet firm on the ground, lest to be shaken because it would mean that her identity as a woman had been assailed. She still gives Mustafa khar a chance when they as a family return to Pakistan after 11 years in exile. Mustafa gives opportunity to Tehmina to run his name as a political candidate in the election on his behalf. This independence makes Tehmina realize the strength within her and her leadership qualities. She passes this phase swimmingly with a dream of having a fulfilled life with Mustafa after his release from the prison. Finally the days comes, when the lion is freed from the cage but his claws are still eager to scratch the sacrifices and adjustments made by Tehmina. She finally decides to leave Mustafa and vows never to look back again. All hell breaks loose on her when is separated from her children after divorce and has to bear the scornful eyes of the relatives. Mustafa communicates to her ? you will always be known as Mustafa khar?s ex-wife?. This feeling does not let her breathe fresh oxygen and plans to write her autobiography in 1994. The ground is cut beneath Mustafa?s feet after the release of the book. This time Tehmina replies ? you will be now known as Tehmina durrani?s ex-husband?. This book talks about a woman's sojourn from a weak, docile and living a wretched life to an individual who breaks her exile and folds the world in her arms. Every woman faces this brush once in a lifetime, not because she is predisposed to do that but her own stature has een built so weak by men that she fails to realize her true potential.
