The King With The Magic Touch

The story' The King with the magic touch' tells us about the overwhelming greed of King Midas for gold. His obssession with gold blinded him to everything else-to his duty towards his subjects, to the beauty of nature, to the things that really matter. It is said that he named his daughter, Marygold so that her presence would remind him all the more forcefully of his precious gold. She was the only person whom he cherished more than gold. He used to spend hours togehther gazing at the gold he owned and desiring more.
To rid King Midas of this obssession, the Gods sent a messenger to him who granted him a wish. Without any hestitation King Midas said that he wished that whatever he touched should turn into gold. The wish was granted. He ran around the palace and then into the garden touching whatever was in his way. At once it all turned into gold. Exhausted at last, he sat down happily for his meal. However, to his horror he found that whatever he tried to eat or drink immediately became gold. Unable to see her father looking so distraught, Marygold got up and hugged him. She at once turned into a golden statue. This was the last straw for King Midas. He realized that the wish was actually a curse in disguise. He lamented piteously and now repented. Moved by his plight the divine messenger reappeared and told him that as he had learnt his lesson, he should go and bathe in the nearby river Phrygia. He should then sprinkle the water of that river on whatever he wanted to restore to its original form.
King Midas immediately did as he was told and first sprinkled the water on his beloved daughter. She at once came back to life. The king distributed much of his gold amongst his subjects and from that day he cared for the things that really matter. He used to enjoy and appreciate the beauty of nature with his daughter. Henceforth, he was an ideal king.
