Eragon
(Christopher Paolini)

Publicidade
It has to be pointed out that in Eragon, Paolini ?just fifteen when he wrote this? has succeeded in creating a fictional character as permanent and endearing as Harry Potter and as worthy of recognition. Unbound by the restraints of adult thinking, Paolini has given Eragon power, influence and destiny to surpass even that of Potter and in comparison, it would be right to consider if Rowling could make more out of Harry if she would only dare go where Paolini has gone.
When Eragon begins this greatest of adventures, he is a boy of fifteen, unaware of his true identity or full potential. The discovery of a dragon egg in the mountains near his home plunges Eragon into a world of magic, retribution, and war. When his uncle is brutally killed, Eragon is on the road with nothing more than a bow on his back and revenge in his heart. The storyteller with whom he travels turns out to be more than a storyteller and teaches Eragon to fight, to use magic and reveals much about who Eragon really is.
Hanging in delicate balance throughout this story, is the innocence of Eragon?s youth and the hard decisions he must make to get through his trials. One of the first decisions he makes is to hide his dragon hatchling away. While this choice initially brings him happiness and the enjoyment of a growing bond between them, he knows this isn?t just a puppy he is hiding away and that the implications could be devastating. His quandary gives a very good sketch of a normal lad with good intentions, which become nobler as the dragon and the plot grow. With the devotion of his dragon, and support of his mentor, the footsteps of this courageous young man are destined to be those of a true hero.
Though tempered by wisdom beyond his years, Eragon still has all the brashness and front of any fifteen year old, often fuelled by his inexperience in certain situations. As he is mentored and discovers the height of his fighting abilities, the depths of his magic, and the influence he holds over others, he is standing on the edge of manhood with these powers barely held in check. Despite this, Eragon is not without fear. He feels pain keenly, loves without limit and wrenches sympathy from the reader on every page.
Paolini isn?t squeamish about the dangers in which he places Eragon. He does not falter in his description of battle, nor does he fear dealing with grief, and he holds nothing back in describing the thrill of riding a dragon.
Paolini moves through this book with passion, carried forward by his tale about a character for whom he clearly feels deeply, and with so much of Eragon?s character reflected in Paolini?s writing, the reader cannot ignore a rather ghostly feeling of the author?s presence on every page. I am tempted to think this story may be a significant metaphor highlighting the beginning of Paolini?s writing career.
