American researchers have suggested that a low - fat diet rich in vegetables and devoid of all animals products - Known as a vegan diet - may be just what women need to trim their waistline, without adopting a spartan lifestyle. Researchers studied 64 over weight , potmenopausal women, dividing them in to two groups. The first group was advised to eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, and whole grain etc. and were recommended regular work outs. The second group ' s was given a regular low fat diet which limited fats to less than 30% of their total calorie intake and protein to about 15% of it. After 14 weeks of study researchers found that women on the vegan diet could show 5.8 kg. mean weight reduction and the second group's was 3.8 kg. " The diet improved older women's senitivity to insulin , a hormone that ushers sugar from blood in to the cells to be used for energy" said research team leader , Dr. Neal Barnard, professor at the George Washington University. The findings have appeared in the latest issue of the American Journal of Medicine.
