Rumours Of A Hurricane
(Tim Lott)
An ailing marriage. A strained father-son relationship. Adultery. Verging alcholism. Sibling rivalry. Sounds like your average Hollywood fare, but this is Tim Lott's story of Charlie and Maureen Buck and their journey through the 1980s - from a council flat in Fulham to a detached house in Milton Keynes fast gaining in value, from an acceptance of the way married life is supposed to be to an epiphany of possibilties. Essentially this is a tale of the emanciption of Maureen, the inability of Charlie to cope with change, and the struggle of their son, Robert, to find a job in Thatcherite Britain. I had never read Tim Lott before this book and found his writing style initially slightly odd. A touch verbose. Over elaborate. Saying twelve things when one would do. Going on a bit too much... But then, there's something strangely compulsive about the style. Knowing the minutae of the Buck's lives you find yourself drawn in and caring about them. A feeling felt all the more keenly since the start of the book gives away Charlie's fate, and you're just waiting to see how he gets to that point. Don't expect a sugary-sweet ending, but do expect a book you'll find hard to put down.
