The Dark Knight Returns
(Frank Miller; Klaus Janson; Lynn Varley)
Frank miller's 'The Dark Knight Returns' is widley regarded as one of comic art's most accomplished works, and a opus for the medium.Published in 1986 as a four part miniseries, Frank Miller, who wrote and drew all of the series, moved the Batman character out of the DC Universe continuity, and in to his vision of a darker more real universe, where superheroes and adventurers lived in fear from a opressive and neurotic public. In the DKR world bruce wayne has been forced to retire his alter ego, and has lived as his civilian identity for ten years. His arch nemesis' are all incarcerated or aged, and the world is dictated by a vociferous media, hellbent on creating 'hype' and 'interest'. To confound this the Whitehouse is filled with posers more interested in their centre-partings than real governence, who strive to force their way into the history books with spin and manipulation. Miller's world is a corrupt mirror of the real world, which parodies and comments on contemporary issues, often throught the varying narratives of both heroes and villans. To these cancers batman may seem an impotent force, but at the dawn of the story batman is revived by the aging wayne, mainly due to his own addictive need for action, and breaks free of his own self imposed shakles. Stylisticlly millers batman closley resembles the classic batman of Bob Kane (Batman's creator), and also seems to nod to the classic TV series featuring Adam West as the dark knight, albeit if darker. Whilst the initial characters batman faces are all grounded and borrowed from the real DC continuity, the batman and his universe are completley of millers invention, Batman is near sixty, comissioner gordon is approaching retirement, and the two nemesis in the tale, Two face and the joker, seem to have more depth and humanity. Indeed miller goes on to break many of the rules, with batman slaying the joker, and when turned into a vigilante and charged by the police for crimes, under manipulation of media and public opinion, he is more than willing to forcefully take on the police to avoid capture and continue his crusasde. Millers batman story is one of obsession and morals, often taking side swipes at youth culture and more tellingly on the aged flower generation liberals of the 60's. The summit of the story is batman's final showdown with the superman, who under orders of the president is called to bring the bat in. A battle of wills more than of braun, miller manages to execute the fight without the mindless drivel and posing spouted by others, preffering instead to focus ion the internal monologue of his characters, and the art showing what is literally a street brawl. Artisticlly DKR packs a punch, coloured in grey shades and dim colours, the batman figure exudes weight and mass, and has a real sense of poise, the joker's contorted features and androgony are genuinley creepy, anf comissioner gordon, well he just looks tired. Mix with millers vision of Gotham this causes a brilliant effect, with art and story both screaming for attention, and both equally worthy of it.
