The Chronicles Of Pern: First Fall
(Anne McCaffrey)

Publicidade
The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall, follows the story of the first human settlers on the planet of Pern. They have left the more occupied areas of space, run by greedy corporations and federations of warring planets to follow the dreams of a Utopian society on this planet that was surveyed centauries before.
After taking many years of travel to get their, mainly in deep sleep cyro-stasis the book starts with the final approach and the decent to the planet. Unlike the worlds they left, First Earth and Alpha Century, their new world will have to be very low-tec and basic to survive, with little machinery, computers and no space travel.
The colonists decided to set the centre of their community on the side of a dormant volcano and as they settle into their new home the colonists find new wonders of Pern, like the small fire-lizards as well as bringing animals from home. However not many years after their settling into their new home they find Pern has more surprises to offer the colonists and the new ones aren't so wonderful.
The colonists at first strugle but search for the awnsers to what has happened and find ways to deal with them.
The book closes with the colonists facing one final problem that had been building thoughout their stay and having to take drastic action as it finaly strikes.

If you've read the other Pern books then I would defiantly suggest this book. It gets behind the beginning of the whole of Pern, why humans are their, where Thread comes from, the Dawn sisters and Dragons.
It's a great read just for these reasons and as you read it things you've read in the other books makes more sense.

It's different from the other books in so much as its more Sci-fis and has more a more high-tec atmosphere. Also some of the characters although not the same ones tend to resemble those of the other Pern books. If you've read the other books you can also more or less predict the overall course of the book although its in-depth plot and intimacy with the characters still give enough to the book to make it worth reading.

In all the books an enjoyable read and defiantly worth reading if you are a fan of the other books, even if Sci-fi isn't your thing it may be worth a look, and the way in which the Pern mythology is developed is amazing and how things from the other books are explained is great.
If you've never read any of the Pern books then I would recommend starting on one of the others as this may spoil some of the surprises.
