The Mother (part-2)
(Sri Aurobindo)
Mother (Part-2). The four embodiments. Mother is the divine conscious force, which dominates all existence. She is one but appears in different aspects differently. There are three ways of being of the Mother, which are revealed when one enters into communication with the Conscious Force that upholds man and the universe. Transcendent, the original Supreme Shakti (Power) is the first embodiment. She is located above the worlds and links the creation to the mystery of the Supreme. Mahashakti, the universal is the second. She creates all these beings, contains and enters them, supports and conducts all the million processes and forces. The third is the Individual who embodies the power of these two vaster ways of her existence. She is the link between the human personality and the divine Nature. The original transcendent Shakti is the Mother. She stands above all the worlds and bears the Supreme Divine. She plays with the Supreme. She is part and parcel of the divine conscious-force. Nothing can happen without her consent. Nature is the most outer executive aspect of the universal Mother, the Mahashakti. Each of the worlds is a play created by the Mother as envisioned by her. The world of ours is one of ignorance. The worlds of mind, life and body, are all separated in consciousness from their source. This imperfect world of ours is also upheld by the Universal Mother and guided by it. The Mother, the Mahashakti of this world of ignorance stands in an intermediate plane. The mounting and descending hierarchy of planes of consciousness is like a double ladder going into inner Matter and emerging out of it through the flowering of life into the infinity of the Spirit. All the scenes of the earth are dramas of which she is not only the director but also a veiled player, cosmic gods acting as her assistants. She descends into the lesser triple world. Because she has consented to the great sacrifice and put on like a mask the soul and form of ignorance, they survive. She has entered into the darkness to lead to light. In her great love for her children she has agreed to don the cloak of even the prevailing obscurity and has taken the trouble of passing through life and death. This is the great sacrifice. There are four great aspects of the Mother and they are briefly described in the following paragraphs. The first one, imperial Maheswari is above the thinking mind and will. She is great and calm. Since she is the storehouse of all wisdom, nothing can move her. She gives wisdom to the wise, admits visionaries to her counsels, punishes the hostile with appropriate hostility and leads the ignorant according to their blindness. She is full of compassion for all the creatures of her creation. To each man she gives as is required by him as per his nature, be it wisdom or freedom to perish in ignorance since her compassion does not blind her wisdom. But her aim is to build our soul and our desire into the divine Truth. Her second aspect is Mahakali. This aspect represents force and strength. She is the crusader and deals with severity anything connected with ignorance and obscurity. Mahakali is swift, straight and frank. She is also the Mother; her love being as passionate and as intense is her anger. The great, strong and noble worship her for she uses their material forcefully to strength. She gives the conquering might to knowledge and shortens the period for making a thing effective. Apart from Wisdom and Force, The Mother manifests herself in the eternal beauty, universal charm and attraction. This is the third aspect of the Mother and is called Mahalakshmi, the most attractive to the embodied beings. Maheswari is too calm, Mahakali too formidable but everybody looks at Mahalakshmi with joy. She brings unfathomable bliss and harmony. She cannot tolerate the ugly and mean, base, poor and sordid, squalid, brutal and coarse. She likes love and beauty. She brings Divinity on man through the medium of love and affinity. She reveals the mystic secrets of the ecstasy that surpasses all knowledge when admitted to the heart. She reciprocates devotion with passionate longing for the Divine. The charm spread by her is all enduring and ever lasting. Mahasaraswati, the fourth aspect of the Mother is related to perfection and order. Youngest of the four, she is the nearest to Nature. The science and technology are Mahasaraswati?s forte. She rewards to her devotees the intimate and precise knowledge, the subtlety and patience. She wields the power of the efficient builder, organizer, administrator, technician, artisan, classifier of the worlds. Human nature, limited as it is by its obscurity and ego is unable to receive the other presences of the Mother. In order that human nature can transform into the dynamic divine nature, one should put oneself in the hands of the Mother. Three qualities are required for this. They are consciousness, plasticity and unreserved surrender. But one should be on his guard not to judge the Divine Mother by one?s little earthly mind. It is better to open one?s soul to feel her. Mother will refuse to manifest herself if you follow your mind. Follow your soul instead. You must trust the Divine Power to free the godlike elements in you to shape you into an expression of Divine Nature.
