Blackwood Farm
(Anne Rice)
Blackwood Farm is set on, surprise surprise, Blackwood Farm in New Orleans and introduces a new vampire to the chronicles: Tarquin Blackwood otherwise known as Quinn. The majority of the story is Quinn telling us his tale of the lead up to his becoming a vampire, the audience being Lestat. Only the first small part and the last small part are set in present time so to speak where we see events unfold in the ?now?. I find myself starting to read the whole series of Mayfair Witch books where as so far I have only been working my way through the vampire chronicles. The Mayfair?s play quite a big role in this novel as once again we are transported back and forth through time from ancient Pompeii to Athens and right back to New Orleans through the ages. Quinn has for as long as he can remember been haunted by a ghost that is his double and that ages at the same speed as he does, he is also a ?seer? of ghosts and spirits and sees them frequently around the plantation. He becomes stalked by a ghost named Rebecca who was murdered by one of his ancestors. This ghost seduces and takes Quinn?s virginity but also wants vengeance for her death. In the meantime as Quinn becomes more aware of his raging hormones he also becomes deeply attracted to his ghost double ?Goblin? and they too start an intimate relationship. The story focuses on the erotic and bloody past of the Blackwood family and the terrible things that have happened to Quinn?s ancestors which in the end all tie together and seal his and his families fate. He eventually falls desperately in love with a Mayfair but this is doomed from the start and will move you to tears in the end. I have to say the way Quinn is ?bought over? is by far the most ingenious and totally gross way that A.R has conceived so far, I am trying my best to review the book without giving the plot away but find it quite hard when I so desperately want to rave about the book. This was one of those novels that once you pick it up you can?t put it down otherwise you think, sleep, dream the story and as usual at the very last page we are left hanging and gagging for the next book. Frantically skipping ahead a few pages and thinking ?she wouldn?t end it like that surely!? but she does! A sensual and bloody paranormal delight! A true Anne Rice fan will love this book!!
