Memnoch The Devil-vol 5 In The Vampire Chronicles
(Anne Rice)
As per usual with Rice, the language is beautiful; her description of events and places truly is second to none. She has this knack of drawing you right into the frame she is describing. For that alone, I think she is one of the best in her field today. So, thought-provoking then. It is!!! It really is. "Memnoch..." brings up all kinds of theological arguments and questions. Granted we're only seeing what Rice believes but she obviously has researched many beliefs and tenets of many religions and drawn her own conclusions. I am not a highly religious individual, but I found the questions I was forming after reading this to be very interesting and a subject I've never given much thought to. She has a very interesting concept of hell and the devil which I'd really like to share with you. The Devil, Lucifer, Satan, whatever you want to call him (although he prefers Memnoch) is a fallen angel (hey no news there but bear with me!), he was cast out of Heaven by God because he questioned God's plan and also Memnoch fell in love with humanity, and wondered whether God realised the extent of what he made. According to Rice, it was Memnoch who orchestrated the coming of God to Earth in the guise of Jesus; and according Rice Memnoch will one day be allowed back to the arms of his maker. You see, Hell is a place of learning, it's a kind of cosmic painful university and when you graduate you get to go to Heaven. Rice's Hell is where you learn from everything you did wrong and once you forgive yourself for these wrongdoings and once you forgive God for letting you do them, you get your golden gate pass to eternity in Paradise. Memnoch gets to go home when he has saved all the souls that come to Hell. Which is going to be a very long time!! This is quite a long review for me!! But I feel that the subject matter and how it affected me really deserved a little extra. I would suggest reading to everyone, and I do feel that it's the only book in the Chronicles that can be read as a stand alone. I really did have my doubts about it when I first bought it, after all a vampire in Heaven seemed blasphemous, but Rice has done herself proud and the end result is a worthy and satisfying read.
