Servant Of The Bones
(Anne Rice)
The beginning of the book introduces Jonathan; he is a writer and well known in his field of Academic writing. In order that he can have some quiet time to write his next book he goes to a secluded little cabin, however while he is there he gets very ill and it seems likely he will die. Azriel a ghost/spirit is seeking out the writer so he can get him to write out his life story, so when he finds him sick Azriel nurses Jonathan back to health. When Jonathan has recovered sufficiently Azriel starts to tell his tail. The story is told in the same way as Interview with a vampire, and this style does suit the book. After this first introduction we go back in time to ancient Babylon and meet Azriel and his community. Azriel can see and speak with the god Marduk and has been able to since he chose him as his personal god when he was a child. Marduk is the main god of Babylon and the city was said to be built by him. Azriel becomes the citys new representation of Marduk. Azriel is painted all over with poisonous cooled gold and is afterwards paraded through the streets, as the gold stiffens more is put on so he can continue to move. After a while he is a living statue, unable to do anything but watch. After a few days an evil priest and sorceress take Azriel so they can perform a rite that will turn him into the servant of the bones. While chanting the rite they throw the gold covered Azriel into a cauldron of boiling gold, unable to take the pain Azriels spirit leaves his body. When the priest and sorceress empty the cauldron they have the gold covered bones that Azriel is now bound to. In his rage Azriel kills both the priest and the sorceress. He then collected his bones and set off to find out what happed to him and what he is. Azriel had a casket where he would rest with his bones until a Master called to him. He was allowed to kill if he needed to but was told he should be kind to those who needed help. Through his time as the servant of the bones Azriel had many master, some were good and so Azriel remained with them but others were evil so he killed them. After many centuries Azriel was called upon, but he didn?t know by whom. The first thing he knew he saw a young woman murdered in a shop by three men. He kills the three men, not knowing what else he is supposed to do. He then searches for his bones and the person who summoned him and tries to save the world from disaster. This is a book on its own and is not part of set so it?s the perfect book to start with if you have never read Rice before as its typical of her style. The story is very sad, especially when the young Azriel is willing to sacrifice his life for a bloodless invasion but he is tricked into become something he sees as evil. This is a good and enjoyable read it has an exciting ending with and intriguing twist. Definitely a book I?d recommend to fans and those who have never read Rice before.
