The Diamond Necklace
(Guy de Maupassant)

Publicidade
What would you do if you borrowed
a really expensive necklace to attend a formal occasion and then lost it?
That's the dilemma in this tale of a fateful night and the pains one
woman will go to in order to prevent others from finding out her secret.

Mathilde just wanted to fit in with the people of privilege, but she was
poor and hated that fact. Then one day her husband received an
invitation to attend a formal event. Instead of being happy she became
angry because she had nothing to wear, being so poor.

Well, her husband gave her the money he had been saving so she could
have a nice gown, but then she realized that she had no jewelry. So she
asked her rich friend if she could borrow a necklace. It was beautiful
and it made her feel as if she could mingle with the cream of society on
equal footing.

And then she lost it.

She would never be able to show her face in public again. She had to
either find or replace the necklace!

The ending will keep this story in your thoughts for years to come.
