The 13 Clocks
(James Thurber)
The act of rediscovering an author can hurt. Not only do you go by others' recommendations--not always the best thing to do--but by your own painful past, reliving the awkward words on the page, placed by an author about whom you really could have cared less. On the other hand, discovering the words of a great American humorist can lead to a world which you missed and didn't know it. Welcome back to James Thurber. In the era of E.B. White, Robert Benchley and Dorothy Parker and the World War II, Thurber created daydreamer Walter Mitty, wrote for the New Yorker magazine, created over thirty-six books and became one of the nations most beloved humorists. He was tough-minded when he took on the government (The White Swan, The 13 Clocks) or when he borrowed language and utilized defunct military codes to put names to his most famous and infamous characters. And, perhaps he was a bit disillusioned about man's ineffectiveness (Is Sex Necessary?), and when he catagorically state that women should run the world. Thurber's sketches were as indelible as his writings, and with tongue in cheek he took on the establishment, grinding it beneath his well-rounded heel, before leaving you with the feeling everything would be alright, if we only had a "Golux" or two around. James Thurber's The 13 Clocks is a fairy tale. But, this fairy tale is for adults, as the hidden references, the wording and names are all definitive of what could be right or wrong with the nation. To win the hand of the princess (lead a country) the prince (nominee for president) must overcome the impossible feat and return to the evil Duke (opposing political party) with the jewels (campaign money/promises). From the character of Whisper, who is never seen, to the Golux (campaign manager), Thurber weaves a "corporate" story into the most edgy of readings. Or, you can simply read Thurber to expand your author base. These books are notoriously funny, and if you aren't looking for a hidden meaning, you will enjoy them as much as you do any good book. Check out Thurber's The 13 Clocks, The White Deer, Alarms and Diversions, Is Sex Necessary, The Clocks of Columbus. You will not regret rediscovering an brilliant author from a bygone era.
