Dr. Watson, injured in Afghanistan, returns to London, where he has no family. Not willing to stay at the hotel any longer, he looks for an apartment and someone to share the expenses with. He is introduced to another young man, who he is also looking for a lodging. Watson?s roommate-to-be is a little too eccentric and cold-blooded: he is known for beating corpses in the morgue to find out if they can develop bruises. Meet Mr. Sherlock Holmes in the beginning of his career.
Watson is fascinated with Holmes? knowledge of British criminal world, but he finds his new friend?s interests very specific and unusual. Holmes is great at certain subjects, such as chemistry, anatomy, botany, British law, but he is ignorant when it comes to literature or philosophy. As Watson puts it, Holmes? ignorance is as remarkable as his knowledge. Holmes deliberately keeps his head free of unnecessary information. He compares human brain to the empty attic, where one keeps only the tools he needs, but in a large assortment. Luckily for Watson, they seem to be compatible. Holmes is a good musician, he entertains Watson, and they have great conversations about many interesting subjects. Watson enjoys Holmes company. He accepts the uniqueness of his new friend, and soon becomes Holmes? companion and a biographer. And Holmes seems to like to have a pair of friendly eyes and ears. when he needs to verbalize his ideas.
Holmes works on the case he names ?A Study in Scarlet,? and uncovers the Lauriston Gardens mystery - circumstances of the death that was a chain in the long sequence of events happened far from British shores. Holmes? brilliantly demonstrates how the Science of Deduction and Analysis helps solve the most complicated case. Narrator?s talent makes this novel as fresh as if it were written yesterday, and you would read it again and again.
