War Of The Worlds
(H.G. WELLS)

Publicidade
War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells chronicles a Martian invasion of Earth at the end of the nineteenth century and focuses on events in London and the Home Counties, seen through the eyes of a passive narrator.

The Martians invade by firing great projectiles from a giant gun on the surface of their planet, each shell large enough to accommodate all the ?men? and equipment necessary to construct several of their towering tripedal fighting machines ? the book?s iconic weapons of destruction.

Unable to muster an effective response to the Martian onslaught, it appears the human race is doomed. A red plant begins to grow wherever the Martians have been, a plant that chokes the vegetation of Earth and, while trapped in the debris of a collapsed house, our narrator sees the Martians feeding on still living men and women, caught up in nets like fish from the sea.

And yet, finally, the invading army is defeated. Not by men, but by earthly microbes, against which the Martians? immune system has no defence. Crying out piteously from their immobilized fighting machines, one by one they succumb to this fatal infection, and carrion birds flock about the cockpits of their craft, to feast on their flesh.

With his descriptions of armored fighting machines, artillery weapons capable of firing huge projectiles vast distances and poison gas shells, Wells shows us that he is ever the prophetic writer. Just two decades after publication of War of the Worlds came World War One, and glimpses of the horrors of twentieth century warfare can be seen throughout this book.

War of the Worlds can be read, and enjoyed, as a thrilling science fiction adventure, but closer analysis can be far more rewarding. It can be seen as an examination, perhaps even a dark satire, on British Imperialism and empire building. Wells was writing at a time when Great Britain was the most powerful country in the world, when a quarter of the globe was pink with British ownership. Wells turns all this on its head and asks ? what would happen if the most powerful nation on Earth were invaded by an even greater opponent?
