Let me start off by saying that this is the kinkiest non-kink novel I've ever read.
Do not let the length of the book (630 p) deter you from picking up a copy of this masterful gem. "Carnevale" is a tale that will keep you from doing anything. It will make you daydream, make you want to create, make you creative, make you equally voracious of both sexes, and, finally, stir something in you that will make you forever smile that knowing smile. Epic in length, and fulfilling in desire, "Carnevale" is not for all, but for those who can handle her, it's one hell of a ride.
This tale of passion is narrated to the captivated reader by Cecilia Cornaro, who, at thirteen, experience how it was to be "loved properly", when she was lured out of her bath, out the window, and into the arms of renowned seducer, Giacamo Casanova, lover of women, and lover of Love. Cecilia was the last Venetian under his devoted gaze until Fate and Poverty and Shame forced him out of Venice, the land he loved.
Skip to twenty-five years later, where Cecilia, a celebrated portrait painter, finds a man she truly loves, but does not reciprocate this love, and cannot, at least, not the way Casanova did, the way she had grown to yearn for. He is Lord Byron, a "mad, bad, and dangerous to know" poet who fled to Venice to escape England. He constantly torments and tortures Cecilia, yet she still loves him so, though acknowledging realistically his flaws and faults.
Set against the beautiful backdrop of 17th century Venice, La Serenissima, which spends six months of the year and euphoric carnevale, in its own incandescent, decaying splendor, "Carnevale" is a decadent glimpse into the eventful and exciting life of both Cecilia and her lovers. Radiant sensuality infused with an old, sophisticated charm in its place and people make "Carnevale" quite haunting and not easily forgotten.
