THE EFFECTIVE WAY OF MEMORISING MARK ANTHOY?S oration

Anthony did begin his speech very tactfully avoiding even an iota of inkling that he had come to praise Caesar but he had come just to bury him. But he puts in, an effort to bring to the light that the human nature is so cruel that it buries and forgets the good deeds of a man, with his burial and retains to discuss the bad deeds, for the several years to come. He adopts this style because the citizens are hostile and stand in support of Brutus and against the Caesar having been convinced that he was growing ambitious and if alive would make all the Romans slaves.
The contention of Brutus that Caesar was growing ambitious and is likely to put the Liberty and Freedom of the Roman Citizen?s at stake had been the only potential and influencing aspect of his speech, so Anthony?s initial effort was to dilute and evaporate this impression from the minds of the people. This had been achieved by him by tactfully bringing to the notice of the people the following three aspects:--
[a] Whenever Caesar had brought wealth to Rome by overpowering an enemy, he did not keep the wealth to himself but gave it to the people to use it for themselves, and do they identify this as the nature of an ambitious man?
[b] Whenever the Roman?s wept undergoing some troubles Caesar was also seen to weep for them. The ambitious men have been seen to have stone hard hearts and are not seen to have wept at the troubles faced by the common citizens. Does this aspect make Caesar seem an ambitious man?
[c] I had offered crown to Caesar the crown thrice in the presence of you all at the Lupercal festival celebrations, but have you not seen him to have refused it by pushing it away all the three times? Does this aspect make Caesar seem an ambitious man?

Initially he seeks a moment?s respite from the people stating that his heart had got emotionally surcharged and had gone to the coffin of the Caesar. He reminds the people that till yesterday Caesar with just a bend of his eye, used to make the three continents stay gripped by fear and today the same man is lying in dust in an unceremonious way with none to weep or mourn for him. He reminds that they had loved Caesar till yesterday and they had very good reasons to love Caesar and what is stopping them from shedding a few tears to mourn his death now. Then he laments that the decision making authority of Rome, [that is the judgment] had gone to the hands of the cruel people [that is to the hands of conspirators].

Suddenly Anthony changes the topic and reveals to the people that while searching the cupboard of Caesar he had found a document written on a tanned animal hide [parchment] which turned out to be the will of Caesar which he feels is not proper for him to read out to the people because they are not the inanimate pieces of wood or stones but the human beings with hearts filled with emotions and if the will is read it would render them mad and out of such madness he would be instigating them to cause harm to Brutus and others who all are honorable men. He states that he would choose to harm himself or the dead Caesar or if the need arises harm the people of Rome rather than harming the honorable men of stature of Brutus. He tells them that if he reads the will they would come to know the height of love of Caesar for the people of Rome and it would render them to weep and run and kiss the wounds of Caesar and dip their kerchiefs in his blood or pluck a hair of Caesar to keep as a cherished treasure and to pass it to their down generations as a precious legacy.

Anthony evokes a fervent demand from the people to read the will but keeps them under the tenterhooks of curiosity to keep their tempers charged high. then he questions them whether it was not proper for him to show them the man who had written the will before reading his will. He asks them to form a ring around Caesar?s body and shows them the rents made in the cloak of Nervii and impresses them that the highly unkind cut was that of Brutus which has caused more of mental agony rather than the physical pain because he trusted and loved Brutus like an angel. When the people start weeping he uncovers the body of Caesar by pulling away the cloak and presents them with the mutilated body of Caesar.

Anthony uses the final weapon of his oratory arsenal calling back the people already on their way to burn the houses of the conspirators and reads out the will through which Caesar had bestowed upon them all the orchards, gardens, and the entire infrastructure on this side of the river Tiber for the use of the general citizens apart from the wish that all the Roman Citizens be paid 75 drachmas each. This drives the final nail in the coffin and the people put Brutus and others on the run and drive them out of Rome.
