The Shining
(Stephen King)
Meet Jack Torrance, a recovering alcoholic with an unfortunate affliction: he has a fiery temper that manifests itself at the most inopportune moments. After losing his previous job as a direct result of his affliction, he is offered a chance to redeem himself by becoming the caretaker of the Overlook hotel during the winter while it is closed for the season. With a wife and a young child to support, he is desperate to make a success of the chance he has been given - despite the fact that the Overlook becomes isolated from the rest of the world for many months due to heavy snowstorms, a warning frequently declared by both the manager of the hotel and his staff. As the hotel's season ends and Torrance and his family prepare to ensure the hotel is kept in good condition for the next season in spring, everything that haunted Jack from his previously alcohol-fuelled life is superseded by the natural beauty of their surroundings, and the quiet comfort it provides - enabling him to reconcile past differences with his wife and concentrate on writing a play, fulfilling his dreams.Though upon discovering old records within the cellar and obsessively researching the Overlook's history to provide him with a basis for a great American novel, he begins to realise that the hotel is not what it seems - as confirmed by the wanderings of his son, who possesses the 'shine,' a vehicle for the supernatural aura of the Overlook to exploit for its own gain. The sounds of merriment within the ballroom that is accompanied by frequent movement of the elevator suddenly become more intrusive and deliberate, and the topiary animals upon the drive seem to develop a conscious awareness of the humans in their midst...and the satisfying thought of a single drop of alcohol becomes extremely appealing. 'The Shining' is a skillfully created novel that explores the human condition and the way in which both environmental and psychological factors can cause us to transcend the behavioural norms of society and unleash human nature, in all its primal glory ? despite its consequences.
