Elfriede jelinekss latest novel,Gluttony can without a doubt be seen as a sewery,that is aimed towards the adults but also towards teenagers.The Austrich authors prose is sometimes krocked,strange and even questionable.After have been reading the first few chapters of the book,the readers gets to know that there is a glittering mountain lake situated where Jelineks grew up,by the country hill side roads between Gloggnitz and Murzzuschlag.Several pages is dedicated to the enchanting storytelling about how the scenery are,but unfortunatly the lake is not a dark gem that is posted in the mountains,because the water in the lake does not look like water.If you touch it,you get a jelly like impression that contains tons of waterplants.The man made lake is really a picture of a country that is overfed and that is poisened and where all the oxygen is consumed.meaning Austria,simple and clear,someone just blew a hole in the mountains and put a big container in the ground in order to be able to dump all the waist from the building of the roads but then someone else came up with the idea that it is better to fill the container with water.You easally recognize the ground comparison from other books by Jelineks.The womans desire after love and the mans desire after posessions and power.He is an selfish pig and she is a victim.The author brings out suffocating differences of their relationship ore rather a view of his ignorance and of her pain.The new novels subtitle givs the key to her way of doing it,An entertaining book.Why an entertainingbook?That remains to be seen,when everything comes around it is the question of who likes what,but when it comes to me nothing could be futher away from the truth.I base that on the fact that Jalineks is braking against most of the rules of the novels convensions.As the readeryou dont know is talking and where the prespective is,and you are not suppoised to know it either.The narrator runs from one point of view to the other and constantly brakes the focus before she ends it with strange sense of humour.All of this is really as taken from the eavning magazine.She uses phrases and clichees that makes Austria answer back to all the stereotypes.Jelink brakes apart the culture to then put it together again so that their diffrent values,heroes and fairytale like myths can reflect themselfs in eachother and expose eachothers emptyness,one sidedness and in its deception.Just as I experienced it,other people have also lost their patience and labeled Jalineks as a monotonous and onesided author,a parasite without ideas and without visions,a women that enjoyes misery.Axel Odin Van Goud,independent journalist
