Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austen)

Publicidade
Pride and Prejudice is a delightful classic by 18th century writer, Jane Austen. The story takes place in the era in which Austen lived, so it is an accurate protrayal of life in England at that time. It isn?t a story for the speed reader, as it is written in the language and style of that period and can be difficult to follow. However, it is such an insightful and humorous look at human nature, one does not want to miss all the elements presented by the author. Especially fun are the word sparrings between characters.

The main character, Elizabeth Bennet is a lovely, intelligent young woman who posesses wit and charm, repose and self-control. She is the favorite child of her sardonic, but lovable father and the least favorite of her manipulative, worldly-minded mother.

She finds herself and her four sisters to be limited in their choices of matrimony, the only value a woman of that period can hope to gain, due to their lack of financial worth. Because he had all daughters and no son, their father?s estate was to be left, upon his death to the nearest male relative.

Lizzie, as she is called, weaves in and out of potential romances. She is decieved by a man who appears charming, but is unscrupulous and disgusted by a man who appears proud. Lizzie and her sisters seem to suffer the rejection of the wealthier class, causing Lizzie to scorn the society she determines to be lofty-minded.

When her youngest sister, Lydia brings scandal into the family, Lizzie gets the lesson of her life and her own pride is humbled as she is treated to the kindness of an admirer of whom she thought the worst.

The book and title is really all about the sin of assumption and trust in one?s own judgment. It is a temptation which causes us all to make evaluations and form oppinions of others, when we work from a limited view and understanding.

A great story! No wonder it is among the classics!
