Disclosure
(Michael Crichton)
A curry of corporate culture, with a layer of law, and tones of technology, mixed together, garnished with a scoop of sex and suspense sprinkled all over, is the perfect recipe for a succulent story, which Disclosure is. Tom Sanders does not get a likely promotion, instead his ex-lover Meredith Johnson lands the position and now Tom Sanders has to report to her. The very day of her appointment Meredith calls Sanders for a meeting in her office in the after hours. She tries to seduce him, he also gets enticed but pulls away in the very end after the foreplay. The next day Tom Sanders finds out that he has been accused of sexual harassment. Meanwhile he has other worries, the manufacturing of CD-ROM drives for which he is responsible, has some errors that his team is not being able to diagnose. At the same time DigiCom, the company for which Sanders works, is being acquisitioned by Conley- White, who have an interest in the drives. Sanders seeks an outside counsel and presses charges of sexual harassment against Meredith Johnson, which lands him in a precarious position, as any bad publicity of the company may mean that the acquisition would be off, and he would lose his job. Fernandez, a lawyer with a reputation of handling sexual harassment cases successfully, comes to his rescue. What ensues is a war of wits, and a smear campaign. While his mentor reminds Sanders constantly, that he should concentrate on technical matters that is Sander's field of expertise, and anonymous messages keep dropping him hints as to what he should do, Sanders remain indifferent and concentrates on winning the case. Finally what he finds is that, his mentor had always been right, he had been concentrating on the wrong things. He has only one night to set things right and keep his job. Crichton handles all the aspect of the novel brilliantly well. Whether it?s the discussion of law between lawyers, or scientific jargon, Crichton writes it with sheer ease, which also is very easy to read. The plot is ingenious; the reader can?t foretell even what the next page is going to be. All in all Disclosure is a fantastic book, page-turner and the book that can be re-read many times, in fact it?s a great value for the money. Michael Crichton was born in Chicago, in 1942.
