Dragons' Kin
(Anne McCaffrey; Todd McCaffrey)

Publicidade
Taking their loyal readers back for another instalment of the Dragonriders of Pern, this book is the first co-writing experience between Anne McCaffrey and her son Todd McCaffery. Steeped in the tales of Pern since early childhood, Todd is an excellent choice to join McCaffrey in her on-going additions to this fantastic world. The book, Dragon?s Kin, focuses on those genetic mishaps created by Wind Blossom. Wind Blossom is the daughter of the Eradani geneticist Kitti Ping, who engineered the dragons. In her quest to duplicate and enhance her mother?s work, Wind Blossom created what many people of Pern consider a genetic tragedy. The Whers. A misunderstood and often ill-used creature, not much has been known about them both on Pern and in the eyes of the readers until now. The rare glimpses readers have been given are scene ranging from confusion to interest with the one that will stick in most reader?s minds being when the watch Wher of Ruatha Hold fiercely protected Lessa.Taking place in the Fourth Pass, Dragon?s Kin uncovers the answers to questions that have plagued the minds of many. It focuses on the Natalion mining camp, struggling to produce enough coal to be recognised as a full Hold. Kindan and Nuella are friends in the camp, Kindan an aspiring Harper while Nuella holds a secret she cannot share and so is kept away from the general populace of the camp. When the Camp?s last Wher is killed, Kindan is given the opportunity to become the new camp Handler. To do this, he must give up his passion of becoming a Harper.Throughout the story the abilities of the Whers, how they see the world and how to correctly interact with them is detailed. Even as the light of a new era at the Camp dawns so the questions that lurk in the mind about Whers vanish. While the main focus of the story is the Whers and revealing the until-now-unknown information about them, the authors go into a fair amount of detail about the mining camp and the operations therein. It gives the reader a better appreciation for those who are not dragonriders and the vital function they play in the Pernese society, particularly this seldom mentioned miners who are in many respects the backbone of Pern. While the ending is not wholly unexpected, it comes to a satisfactory conclusion that leaves the reader wanting to know more about Natallion?s camp, Kindan, Nuella, and Whers. As with all of her books, McCaffrey brings Pern to life in such an extraordinary and vivid manner reading Dragon?s Kin makes the reader want to go out and find a Wher to Impress.
