Freedomland
(Richard Price)

Publicidade
Freedomland by Richard Price, currently a movie, starring Samuel L. Jackson, and Julianne Moore, is a big (over 700 pages), multiracial, powerful American novel. A powerful American epic. Richard Price, from New Jersey, is one of our premier American novelists, since his publication of The Wanderers in the mid 1970's to his current Samaritan. He is also a screenplay writers with such movie credits as Shaft, Sea of Love, Clockers (from his novel of the same name), and The Color of Money.
Richard Price is a writer of almost flawless dialogue and dialect. He knows the American dialects, the American character and the American scene. Freedomland is based on the famous Susan Smith story. It is also a media story, and in this book the "good guy" detective and the "questionable" reporter pursue the story of the so-called kidnapping of a woman's child. Susan Smith in this fictionalized version is now Brenda Martin, also a white woman making the claim that a black man hijacked her car and drove away with her four-year-old little boy. The detective is Lorenzo Council, an African American detective. Jesse Haus is the white reporter. The cities might also be characters. There's the mostly black city Dempsey (D-Town) and the mostly white city Gannon. There is the media circus and the racial tensions that many times dominate American headlines and American angst. The novel is suspenseful and fast-paced. Always is the question, as in the real story, Should we believe Brenda Martin? Here cinematic technique, journalistic techniques are blended with the best techniques of contemporary fiction.
Principle and minor character of this American scene are very well realized, as is the contemporary, "gritty" urban scene. In this novel, as in Richard Price's other novels, the dilemmas, depths and textures of the American psyche(s) and the American realities are always at the forefront. Price is a non-nonsense novelist, who knows the ghettos of America, no matter what the color or ethnic origins of the inhabitants.
