The Ignrance
(Milan Kundera)

Publicidade
Milan Kundera left his country in 1974 for France. He was persuaded that his literary career was finished. Several years passed before his produces a new novel, (The insupportable lightness of the human), written in Czech in 1982, but published the first time in French translation at Gallimard in 1984. This novel was worth a world reputation to him was decisive for his literary destiny. He started to re-examine and correct all the translations in French of his works and to write directly in French, firstly essays
-The art of the novel, 1986,
-The betrayed will, 1986
And the firstly novels:
- Slowness (1995)
-The identity (1997)
-Ignorance (2000).
His course of writer remakes in some measurement the way of Emile Cioran who joined also the French culture after a long period of silence by the Precise of decomposition written in 1949, eleven years since his establishment in France. But there is a fundamental difference as for the attitude observed towards their originating culture: Emile Cioran wanted to be, without forgetting and scorning his Rumanian roots, a French writer with whole share. He is for this reason, that he avoids speaking Rumanian even with his Rumanian friends and that of all his work he regarded as important only three titles:
- Syllogisms of the bitterness,
- The disadvantage of having been born
- The fall in time (seven pages of this last!).
On the other hand, Milan Kundera aspires to dual membership, the culture and the literature Frenchwomen, certainly, but colored by Czech culture. When he becomes writer of French expression instead of relegating his works preceding the emigration in the literary box room by his drawers, he republishes them, supervises and revises their translations in French. He makes them in circulation at Gallimard with the mention between 1985 and the 1987. The translations of the works were entirely re-examined by the author and consequently, have the same value of authenticity as the Czech text?.
In its last novel, ignorance, Milan Kundera puts in scene, once again, the life of a couple, Irena and Josef. In fact, it is the history of two people whose similar destinies intersect for only one day. The departure of Josef, without knowing the name of the woman who liked her is a logical consequence of this resemblance of their destinies which in a first authority pushed one towards the other and in a second moved away.
, Kundera, for to frame well their history evokes the triumphal return of Ulysses in his Ithaque after twenty years of absence. The famous warrior finds his faithful Pénélope, his old dog, he is happy, and all finishes well. The beautiful outcome of this mystic history is for Kundera a risky bet and it will be seen that the risks of its persons will not be able to confirm it.
Irena and Josef are emigrants who fled repressions of the communist mode after ?the Spring of Prague?: Irena established with her Martin husband in France and Josef, chooses Denmark to him. Martin died shortly after the arrival in France and Irena, mother of two girls, must cross ?long painful years, forced to accept any work, cleaning lady, assistance-looking after and of a paraplegic rich person? even if at a given time, she can make translations of French Russian. At the end of a long series of morose days, she knows Gustaf, a Swede become Parisian to live far from a wife who does not want to accept the divorce by amicable agreement. Gustaf, his elder fifteen years, is not nevertheless, the dreamed man. Beyond his childlike, is rather lost and badly at ease with himself. But he will be satisfied by the love of the mother of Irena.
We have up to now here apparently the screen of Mrs. Bovary. But the drama of Irena and Josef is primarily different from the history of an adulterous love. The drama develops simultaneously on two registers and the structure of the novel is musical. The register of their future meeting in love, under consideration by both either like a great project of life (Irena), or like a happy gift (Josef). This register, whose starting point is the dissatisfied femininity of Irena, becomes a obsessive leitmotiv of the moment when it believes to recognize as Josef the man who courted her sincerely a few moments in a Prague's bar of his youth.
The second register is rather abstract: the condition and the failure of that which after a long absence is confronted with his past, his memory and his memory of the others. It is a topic with multiple possible variations and it is tangle, of these two topics which arises the gravity and the depth of this beautiful novel, of a refined intelligence. The novel defies the generally ideas on the emigration and the emigrants.
