The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy
(Douglas Adams)
The first in a classic Sci-fi comedy series adapted from a BBC radioplay, repeated as a BBC televison 6 part series and more recently turned into a Major Motion Picture starring Martin Freeman Arthur Dent, Mos Def as his best friend (from another planet) Ford Prefect and Sam Rockwell as the 2 Headed Renegade President of the Galaxy, Zaphod Beeblebrox. And it get's weirder from there.... Arthur Dent wakes up none the wiser on the morning that the Earth is due to be demolished to make-way for a Hyperspace Bypass. Luckily for him, his best friend Ford happens to be a writer for the titular Hitch-hikers Guide, on Earth revising it's current entry about the planet: Harmless. Ford and Arthur hitch a lift on one of the demolition spaceships and so begins the hilarious tale of Arthurs mis-adventures through space (and time) still dressed in his bathrobe and accompanied by a gloriously technicolour cast of supporting characters, from the hilariously morose Marvin the Paranoid Android, to Eddie- the nerve-gratingly cheerful spaceship's computer. Slartibartfast- planet designer, Zaphod Beeblebrox- president of the Galaxy, Trillian- Arthur's love interest (and only other surviving human) and a host of other characters incidental to the plot but bellyachingly funny. This is a story of talking mice, orgasmic doors, missiles, spermwhales, a bowl of petunias, a running shoe shaped spacecraft, infinite improbibilities and of course the Hitchhikers Guide to the galaxy. The guide is employed by the author as a device to break up the main story with interesting and humourous anecdotes about nothing in particular. Adams writing style is a joy to experience. not quite plot driven, not quite stream of conciousness. Constantly laugh out loud funny- highly recommended.
