The Job You Do Is Your God
(NAVARANJANI SRIDHAR)
Once there lived a man in a village. His name was Williams. He was a cook and he used to make food for all the functions held in that village. Many people enjoyed the special taste of his food. He had one son, whose name was Thomas. He always helped his father in cooking and received appreciations from his father. He was an intelligent student in his school and always secured the first rank. The Government offered him financial help for his higher studies, since he could not afford to pay the fees. He completed the college studies and became a specialist in Technical Department. Many companies offered him jobs, including foreign concerns. But he thought that he should work for his own Nation, since his Government offered him such a huge help. He joined in one of the local companies, and he was offered with the post of the head of the technical department of that company. Though he was in a very high position in that concern, he was very simple and very kind with his workers. He never failed to appreciate the staff, who did the job at its highest level. At the same time, he was very strict, whenever a mistake was made. He corrected them to do the job in the exact way. He was always perfect with the job. Merlin, the manager was one of the staffs and he was not up to the standard. Though he was the senior most persons, he was not perfect in his job. But, Thompson was always very kind with him and gave proper instructions for the betterment of the job. Just because of this, Merlin was not satisfied with the relationship with his chief. He thought that his chief was behaving intentionally to show his powers. But Thompson respected him for his age and never used unwanted languages. Merlin wanted to teach him a lesson. When Merlin was about to celebrate his daughter?s wedding, he extended invitations to every staff, excluding the chief. Thompson knew this, but he was very calm. He did not think in the other way and took it easy. On the day of the function, Merlin and others were very busy in inviting the people at the entrance and providing them with seats. Suddenly he came to the kitchen and he was shocked to see Thompson, his chief was working there. He was really felt ashamed of himself. But, he did not talk to him, and of course, Thompson did not see Merlin. During the dinner, everybody appreciated the food and they wanted to meet the chief cook who was responsible for the fine and delicious food. Merlin said that the chief cook is the chief of our company. After the function was over, he came to Thompson and apologized. Thompson said, this is the work undertaken by my father. Since he was not doing well, he asked me to arrange someone else for preparing food. Since there was no time for me to find out another cook, I thought that I would fulfill my father?s commitment. Of course, I know that I can do well, because of my experience. It is not important which job you are doing, but if you have the dedication and devotion towards the job, you can make it to the entire satisfaction of others. I am proud to be a cook here, rather than the chief of our company. It is quite true. Do not rank the job you are doing. Every job is an important job, depending upon the situation. There is no meaning in saying, this is a good job and that is a bad job. Everything is equal.
