Psalms
(The Bible)

Publicidade
The writer, in Psalm 49, wants everyone everywhere to know of his defiance of those who worship at the altar of Mammon especially those who think that because of their wealth, they have the power of life and death over people. He states that those who boast of their wealth, intimidating or threatening others, do not often consider the limitations of this god of theirs.

According to the Psalmist, the first limitation of wealth is that money cannot be given to God in exchange for a human life. This indicates that human life is priceless before God. It follows then that it takes more than money to ensure that man lives forever happily. The second limitation is that the wealthy themselves cannot secure unending lives for themselves with their money. For example, one can buy a very nice bed but one may not be able to buy sleep. The fact is that the wealthy eventually die and leave their wealth behind. He insinuates here that death does not respect the wealthy more than he does the poor. Like ordinary mortals that they all are, both the poor and the rich die and both return to dust where they were originally taken from. The third limitation is that, for the ungodly rich, after this earthly life, there is nothing more for them.

For the godly man however, says the writer, even if he dies, God will redeem his soul from the grave. He is implying that the godly man invariably has a far brighter future than the ungodly rich. It must be realised however that the Psalmist is not condemning wealth or the wealthy for the sake of it. In any case, if there were to be a choice, most people would prefer wealth to poverty. What the writer seems to saying is that it is possible to be wealthy and at the same time be godly. The key thing is that one should not put one's trust in one's wealth but in God who gives everything fully and freely. Surely, the godly rich are approved of God and they very much belong to Him.
