The Naked Sun

Kashmir?s Trout fish is a famous cuisine throughout the world, but experts say that unhindered poaching of the exquisite fish will soon result in wiping out the species from the waters of the valley. Trout was introduced in the streams of the valley by the British in the early nineteenth century, to address the need of Queen?s officers posted in the far off land. Later it became a part of royal table during the Dogra rule and the Dogra Maharajas fervently preserved the species, which multiplied rapidly in the supportive environment provided by the valley?s mountain streams. But the exit of royalty appears to have created a free-for-all over the years that could soon result in the extinction of the exotic fish in Kashmir, at least in its natural habitat. The local law of the state too has declared trout as a protected species and many fast water streams have been declared ?protected water beats? to preserve the habitat of this highly sensitive fish species. As the water levels in the various mountains streams of the valley fall phenomenally during the winter months, the trout fish migrate towards isolated water pools in large number for survival. These isolated deep waters are in the vicinity of the human population and the locals living in the vicinity of protected trout beats are these days said to be using bleaching powder to kill catch the fish. After the poachers mix bleaching powder in the pools, the fish simply get strangled and start floating at the surface. ?The bleaching powder not only kill the trout fish cruelly, but also destroy all forms of life inside a water pool by diminishing oxygen contents of the water,? said Harbajan Singh a college professor in a zoology ?This means not only the adult trout fish is killed by poachers, but even the spawn and the eggs of the fish that could form the next generation of the species also die.? adds Singh. Nature lovers in the valley are skeptic about a reprehensible nexus between the poachers and the Water works department of the valley, as bleaching powder is rarely available in the market and is only available with the water works department in large quantities- used to treat drinking water to make it safe for human consumption. ?The poachers have a nefarious nexus with employees of the water works department who either sell the bleaching powder bags to them or get their share of the loot.? Said Manzoor Ahmed a resident of Watergam. The water bodies of watergam are nowadays full with the trout fish. There are also reports that some army units are using grenades to stun and skill fish in large numbers in the pools of the valley these days. ?Yes we have reports that army is illegally killing the trout fish in Bandipoara and Rafiabad areas of the district, but we are helpless when army people resort to such unlawful practices,? said an officer of the fisheries department. The state fisheries department is planning to spread massive awareness campaign, to educate people in making trout a way to attract more and more tourists to the trout rich water bodies. ?People need to be educated, as trout could became a way to attract tourist- as anglers from around the world want a safe and isolated place to catch fish, we issue special permits to anglers to catch the fish- but now the thrust of anglers is gradually shifting from catching the fish for table to a healthy sport where the caught fish is later related back in the water.? Said a high rung officer in Fisheries department. The officers also said the money collected from the anglers is used for the upkeep of hatcheries where the fish are cultures for production. But if the practice of mixing huge quantities of bleaching powder in their natural habitat continued, the famous fish species could soon become extinct in Kashmir. Write your abstract here.
