Toxin
(Robin Cook)

Publicidade
Dr. Kim Reggis is a recently divorced cardiac surgeon who shares custody of his ten-year old daughter Becky, with his ex-wife, Tracy. One day, at a local fast food joint, Becky consumes a hamburger contaminated with the bacteria E. coli O157: H7 and falls gravely ill. The potent toxin produced by the bacteria causes her to have Hemolytic Uretic Syndrome (HUS) and affects all her major organs, causing her untimely death. Kim, being a doctor himself, feels helpless and is unable to deal with her death calmly. He begins to investigate the cause of the food poisoning and discovers appalling secrets. The all powerful beef industry is sheltered by the USDA, who is supposed to inspect their activities. Money and profits rule out all ethics. Aided by Tracy, Kim attempts to expose their misdeeds and explosive truths, in order to prevent further infections, leading to several attempts on his own life.
Robin Cook, the master of medical thrillers, produces an exhilarating concoction of our worst health fears and fast paced drama, really fantastic.
