Why Men Don't Listen And Women Can't Read Maps
(ALLAN PEASE;BARBARA PEASE)
Even for the most ardent reader of non-fiction could a book of that kind become unputdownable. That is what I found this book to be. The insight it gives into the differences between the sexes makes the most sense to someone who has had the (mis)fortune to be distraught, but live in a relationship that is intimate, almost impossible to get out, i.e. in marriage. Well, apart from social conditioning, it is also honestly, the lack of courage to miss the ?goodies?. The whole argument by the authors hinges around evolution, going back to millions of years homo sapiens has taken to be where he or she is. This evolutionary hang-up is still there aver the authors. Several other strategies like political correctness movements, religious conditioning have been used ?unsuccessfully? to rein in the ?unruly? nature of man or the ?talkative? nature of woman, but Nature is still the winner. The presentation is humorous throughout, but hits home the ideas pretty well. Though education, training and popular books on self-development are trying to make people use both sides of their brains, there still seems to be an essential difference in the way the female and male brains are ?wired?. Many books have described in different ways, what the authors have tried to convey, like John Gray?s "Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus", but this book drives home the best. Or is it just the timing in my life? Anywhichway this book is a product of very good amount of research and serious effort. A book?s presentation could be considered good when any intelligent, interested reader comes to the very conclusion that the authors have come to, just a few paragraphs or pages before the authors do. This is what happened when the authors' recommendation on how to choose a marriage partner come up with "look for the points of most common agreement for relatinships on a long term basis", for Nature has wired the male and female brains in such a way as to throw this caution to the winds.Nature wants only procreation, a furthering of the species. I had always wanted to design a marriage partner questionnaire which ensures two people come together in a long term relationship, only if peaceful days are guaranteed after marriage. To this end I learnt that apart from Karma as the deluder there is also Nature?s purpose at work! The thing that makes one sigh is the reduction of all sexual, romantic, love-oriented behaviors to mere biochemistry--- of the male and female hormones. If only such scientific detachment could be used to locate partners, condition oneself to face the communication breakdowns that are part of many relationships, there would have been no need for the religious and other explanations. The conclusion is hard hitting: ?Men want Power Achievement and Sex. Women want Relationships, Stability and Love. To feel upset about this as useful as abusing the sky for raining ? In the same way anticipating the difficulties or conflicts that might arise in relationships as a results o our differences enables you top anticipating and defuse them as they occur.? Though the book does not say anything new that we do not know at a subconscious level, it successfully brings those ideas to the fore and focus so that one is persuaded to work at a relationship. This is more so for a man who cannot take similar messages of the other books which probably work more at the psychological level. The authors have succeeded, in encouraging me to read through John Gray?s classic. Gadhisunu
