Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austen)
.It is,in essence, a straight forward story.Boy meets girl, girl loathes boy,boy despises girl's family, girl feels betrayed by boy,boy proves his worth to girl, and they all live happily ever after. The pride spoken of is almost tangible throughout, and has very little to do with money for its own sake.Although it does have a great deal to do with wealth. The wealth of one's position in society and how one is regarded by one's peers certainly is most prominent.Mr.Darcy is received in awe wherever he goes, for his name travels before him.Whereas Mr and Mrs Bennet are regarded as brash, and too desperate by far to find good husbands for their daughters.Mr.Darcy is plagued by the pride of his position in life.ie,a wealthy man in his own right who is expected to marry a woman of suitable parentage. He is,in fact, for the most part, engaged since birth to his cousin. The young Elizabeth Bennet is also proud. Not of her lack of money, but of her position as sister and daughter. She has a greater sense of self respect than Mr.Darcy, who largely beats himself up for doing what is expected of him,but who does it non the less. She also shows less of a prejudicial nature than he.He judges her entire family on their position in life, and lacking qualities thereof.Whereas she judges him on his response to her family, and his own behaviour, not his wealth or standing in society. It is for these reasons that he accepts his misconduct, and vows to put right what misfortunes have fallen on the Bennets. Not least of all, those he instigated through his own harsh judgements against them. Then the man becomes a hero, and isn't it amazing what having money can do? Miss Bennet's lessons also have to do with accepting people for who they are,and loving them despite the knowledge. She has no problem accepting that her sister should marry a man of wealth and property, yet she finds it demeaning for her best friend to marry a man of the church. Her friend puts it simply. She is no great beauty. This marriage would grant her a home, and her husband a livelihood. This throws up the question of whether Elizabeth's expectations are too high.Is she so proud that no one but a wealthy man will do for her? It is more a matter of Jane Austen's style of heroine, perhaps, that she just will not settle for second best. She has to have it all,and the 'all' is nothing without love.It is also within the stereotype that for the best part of the story she, being the heroine, wouldn't know love if it jumped up and bit her. She has to almost lose it before she realises that Mr.Darcy, with all his faults,is indeed the one for her. Mr Darcy also discovers that he does love Elizabeth. Their mutual understanding of their new feelings, and a healthy dose of forgiveness irons out all double standards and ill conceived judgements to that point. All is well with the world, and love conquers all.Isn't love grand! Pride and Prejudice is aptly named, and may be enjoyed equally through medias of book or film.Rich in setting and language, both will involve your emotions and view of the world. A pleasurable experience all round.
