The Third Man
(Graham Greene)

Publicidade
The Third Man- a mysterious setting; characters strange and diabolical; a match of wits for stakes of life and death-here all the ingredients of a haunting thriller. It is the only thriller written expressly for the motion pictures, published in 1950. It is simple, economical and austere. The world of this thriller is furnished with the texture of violence, terror, and cruelty that is in abundance in the life of the twentieth century.

The story is of Rollo Martins, the writer of cheap thrillers. He arranges to meet his school time friend, Harry Lime, who is presently living in Vienna. He goes to Vienna only to find that Harry lime is dead. Rollo suspects that Harry has been murdered so he refuses to agree with Colonel Calloway who thinks that Harry was a part of some racket. Rollo takes the responsibility of investigating the whole issue. He meets Harry?s friends, neighbors and mistress. Some of Harry?s neighbors tell him that three man had carried away the body of Harry on the night of his murder. Police can account only for two. So now the action of the plot depends on Rollo?s finding the third man. Ironically, this third man is, in reality, always with him.

Being a film story, the characters of the The Third Man are the film beings in place of human beings. It bears all these cinematic marks of style that distinguish the genre from the normal novel. It is very rarely that a film character behaves like a human character. Anna is the only female character in novel that shows greater maturity than Martins. Harbin is a double-agent which adds to the element of thrill. While reading novel one have to bear in mind the fact that the novel was never intended to be more than the raw material for a picture?.This is a must read book for whom who love thrillers.
