The Bridges Of Madison County
(Robert James Waller)
A simple love story beautifully told. The Bridges of Madison County is set in Iowa 1965. We meet two middle aged people, Robert Kincaid, a National Geographic photographer and Francesca Johnson, an Iowa farm wife. While the rest of the Johnson family is out of town for the week Robert and Francesca meet and fall out-of-their-mind in love with each other. The novel is peppered with a variety of midlife themes. The reader is forced to ask several questions about herself as she reads. As youthful dreams become gradually unattainable do I settle for less than I really want in life? Must marriage be a practical deal designed to help us get through life securely and safely? What happened to the passion, romance and intense joy of being alive? Should I be willing to hurt other people to get the things I really want in life? Francesca discovers the unifying, intense, absorbing passion in Robert Kincaid that has been missing from her life. However, she does not want to hurt her children or her husband so she refuses to run away with Kincaid. Though they spend only four days together, the union is the pinnacle of joy that each savors for the rest of their lives. The novel is carefully constructed to give us the physical climax near the middle of the book. The later chapters very powerfully demonstrate how far reaching the feelings were between these two people. Both Robert and Francesca cling to physicalreminders of their encounter. After death they are both cremated and their ashes are scattered at one of the bridges in Madison County. The novel is written with a simple pace that reflects the choice of time and location for the story. Nothing is hectic or hurried. There is time to savor a meal, walk in the meadow at sunset and slowly dance to candlelight in your kitchen. The whole thing stands is dramatic contrast to how most people live their lives.
