Stamboul Train
(Graham Greene)

Publicidade
As the title Stamboul Train itself suggests the book has a certain kind of immediacy. It is anything but a dream work, a complete break with dream constructions of earlier Greene. The melodramatic plot centered on violence and political action becomes more gripping with the addition of thrilling ingredients like flight, pursuit, encounter, intrigue, escapades and death.

The plot of Stamboul Train is well constructed that it appears to be traditional but at the same time it is modern because of the psychological study of the characters. It is simple as well as complex, exposing the evil in the society, revealing the cruelties and barbarities of the modern wasteland.

The book consists of five parts each coinciding with arrival at the major station on the line. Its realism raises it above the level of an ordinary thriller. The lives of all the characters are finely interwoven in the plot. Dr Czinner, a high minded revolutionary who having lived a few years as a refugee in England is returning to Belgrade to join the abortive coup. Czinner is a discovery; the focal point.Myatt, the jewish merchant going to Istanboul to conclude an important business deal. On this journey, he has a brief love affair with the poor chorus girl Coral Musker who is also going for her dance assignment. Mabel Warren boards the train at Cologne with her companion Janet Parode, who is beautiful and sophisticated. Finally, there is Savoury, a popular best selling author. The novelist loathes him and piles insult-on Savoury. When the train reaches Stamboul Janet Parode whom he had thought he had impressed deeply , casually drops him and attaches herself to someone else. Then we have Grunlich, the thief, who shoots Kolber, makes his escape and stops for a cup of coffee. However suddenly he steals the bag of Mabal warren, joins the Orient Express, thus entering the main stream of the novel.

Dr Czinner is arrested when the train arrives at Subotica. Coral is a witness to his arrest. Grunlich is put into a waiting room with Czinner and Coral. Coral is completely confused, she has missed the train, missed her love. She does not want to leave Czinner for her sense of pity towards him. Myatt who has gone ahead leaves the train and reaches Subotica by taxi. But as he reaches there, Czinner manages to escape with coral and Grunlich. On the way he is shot. Ironically, it is Grunlich who escapes with Myatt. Coral, in spite of her deep desire to call Myatt back, cannot do so as she cannot betray Czinner. Both of them hide in a hut. Czinner dies there. Myatt is also attracted towards Janet. She is also tired of her lesbian relation with Mabel. So Coral falls in the arms of Mabel and Janet into Myatt?s. Greene thus completes the pattern to lend unity to the action of the entertainment. It was really a difficult task to present such a complex story with so many characters in a unified manner. Moreover, I find that here in this thriller, Greene had thrown romance aside and adopted Realism. It reflects the tension generated through a mixture of melodrama, realism and romance. Worth Reading!!!
