Genesis
(The Bible)

The story of man before his fall and subsequent descent into ignominy can only be summed up in one word - GLORY. If one dares to imagine a wealthy father who goes away on a long journey leaving everything in care of his children, perhaps one can begin to appreciate the incomparable purpose and love of God for man. The Almighty, by nature, has always been creative and He enjoys doing new things.

However, the need to create man arose only after every other thing had been created. It was like God asked Himself, ' Wait a minute, now that I have made all these things, who looks after them?' Considering the complexity and sheer awesomeness of Creation itself, it certainly meant that such a caretaker must be very unique indeed. Such a caretaker must also be capable of having a relationship with the Creator. It must then have occurred to God that only someone who possessed all the qualities that He (God) has could do the job. The problem though was that God was and still a Spirit. Where then would He find a creature that possessed all His qualities but at the same time had physical attributes. What the Almighty then did was to use the dust of the earth to build something, a body, into which He poured Himself, that is, His breath. The body then sprang into life. Thus man was created with the specific purpose of looking after God's creation. There was no doubt that he was the apogee of Creation.

The Lord God was satisfied because He could now see Himself in man and at last He had someone He could hold accountable if anything were to go wrong in Creation. Man enjoyed privileges several of which were not available to other creatures. For example, he was the image and likeness of the Creator, that is, he could also create, make plans and execute plans. He was also honoured above other creatures in that he named the other creatures. He was able to do this because he was in a perfect state and so the abilities of God flowed through him without any hindrance. God cared so much for him that He even made and gave to him a companion that looked like him. He had tried to look for one among other creatures but He could not find any.

The couple, clothed with glory, had the unique privilege of hosting the Almighty several times in their residence which was the garden of delight, Eden. This perfect relationship was to continue until Adam and Eve were ignominiously evicted from their home in the garden for overstepping their boundary.
