Crime And Punishment
(Fyodor Dostoevsky)

Publicidade
Before Law and Order and CSI there was a book that started it all: Crime and Punishment. Written by Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment takes you into the mind of a cold blooded slaughterer, a debtor, and a kind hearted fellow.
Set in St. Petersburg, Russia, the book follows the psychological path of Raskolnikov. Being a good citizen, he donates to various people regardless of the large debt he owes to his landlady. Being broke he visits a pawn broker who?s cruel malicious personality he decides society would be better off without. The book traces the crime from start to finish, and follows both the detectives and the killer.
Added plot twists include not only psychological problems within Raskolnikov?s mind, but also the effects dehydration has on a human. The novel explores the effects of alcoholism in a society, as well as various other political issues of the time. The political aspect of the book not only allows the reader to understand the situation in 1800?s Russia, but also adds various plot elements that account for added suspense and drama. The book is ingeniously written as it ties together many seemingly unconnected events. Dostoevsky even uses fate to create suspense for the reader.
Dostoevsky withholds information to create suspense, but always includes enough to keep the readers interest intact. It is written so well, that nothing is foreshadowed until it naturally comes up in the plot; not even Raskolnikov?s name. Although Raskolnikov is a cold blooded killer, Dostoevsky creates a degree of innocence about him causing the reader to both pity and forgive him.
Crime and Punishment is Dostoevsky?s greatest works. It leads the way for book, movies, and tv shows to come. If action, suspense, thriller, and mystery are your genre, then this is the novel for you.
