There is a level of bonding and spiritual intercourse between the Almighty and a human being that produces the kind of relationship described by the writer of Psalm 23. The Psalm then is essentially about relationship. Even everyday life, one can see that the relationship between a shepherd and the sheep is almost telepathic. It is like one seems to know what the other is up to.
Therefore, to start with, it is hardly surprising that the first verse of the Psalm ends with the phrase ' I shall not want or I shall lack nothing.' Without any doubt, the root cause of most problems today is lack. Again, lack is not just about lack of money or lack of food. People may lack life, fulfillment, joy, strength, power, necessary authority or peace. Simply because of the forces at work, it is possible for one to diligently play one's part and do everything that seems necessary but still be lacking. What the Psalmist seems to be saying is that the antidote to these problems is to have with God the kind of relationship that exists between the shepherd and the sheep.
This writer simply uses his own life to illustrate the issue at hand. However, there are certain things that must be noted about the relationship between the Lord and the writer, that is, between the shepherd and the sheep. First, the shepherd and the sheep are always together. This proximity seems to be at the core of the relationship. Secondly, the shepherd always seems to be in charge. Thirdly, the shepherd always leads the sheep to where its needs would be met, for instance, green pastures. Fourthly, the shepherd is always protective of the sheep. Fifthly, whatever provision the shepherd makes for the sheep, the sheep does not feel anyone is going to embarrass or harass it. The presence of the shepherd is enough to assure the sheep of its safety.
