Psalms
(The Bible)

Far from being a wish list, what we have in the early part of Psalm 20 is a catalogue of blessings which every godly man or woman has access to or is entitled to. They could be described as the potential blessings of the just. However, the truth is that apart from the faith required to activate them, they actually still need to be drawn out from the well of salvation with prayer. This truth needs to be internalised by all those who have any claim to God

For instance, in verse one, the writer seems to saying, 'There is bound to be trouble, whether you belong to God or not as it is a fact of life. Belonging to God only makes it more likely. However, what sets you apart as a man or woman of God is that in the time of troube, when you cry unto God, He will hear you, defend you, deliver you, fulfill your heart's desire, help you and strengthen you. Do not make assumptions or you will be overcome by those who seek to hurt you. It is yours to do the crying or praying while it is God's to do the hearing, the defending and the delivering. Do not assume, just cry.'

The Psalmist, in this Psalm, also implies that while there can be no doubt that we will celebrate victory as a result of which we will be able to set up our banners, we first need to win the battles on our knees, that is, in prayer. When we have the victory, we will be able to testify among the people of the world about the saving power of the Almighty. We will be able to show to the people of the world that it is not enough to put one's trust in chariots, horses and other weapons of war. We will thus be able to prove to others that it is only the Lord, who is mighty in battle, who saves.
