Secrets of the Desert is the second volume of the Judge of Egypt trilogy. It is based on historical fact with plenty of fiction mixed in. It follows the life of Judge Pazair, a conscientious man, who has stumbled on a conspiracy to overthrow the pharaoh, Ramses II. The book opens in a prison yard in the middle of the ancient Egyptian desert. Pazair has been wrongly imprisoned, without trial, for the murder of his mentor, Branir. His wife, Neferet and spiritual brother, Suti, have been told that he died in an accident.Pazair escapes from the prison and almost dies of dehydration in the desert. He is found by two Sand-Travellors, who capture him and intend to enslave him. His is rescued by Suti, and they go to Memphis to clear his name. Pazair is promoted to Judge of the Porch, and is entrusted with the investigation into the conspirators. He tracks down five people, who are involved in the case, but he is unable to find out who they are working for. He is helped by his friend, Bel-Tran, director of the country?s trade and finance, who gives him inside information on the accomplices? accounts and businesses. Several attempts are made on Pazair?s life, as he gets closer and closer to the truth.You feel that you know who the criminals are in this book, but there is a wonderful turn of events in the final pages. There is plenty of adventure and suspense, and you will not want to put it down.
