NATIONAL TALENT SEARCH SCHEME EXAMINATION The National Council of Educational Research and Training under its National Talent Search Scheme, awards 1000 scholarships including 150 scholarships for Scheduled Castes and 75 for Scheduled Tribes candidates each year. The purpose of this scheme is to identify brilliant students at the end of Class X and give them financial assistance towards getting good education, so that their talent may develop further and they may serve the discipline as well as the country. The awardees studying in Basic/Social Sciences are eligible to receive scholarship up to Ph. D level where as the awardees studying professional courses in medicine /engineering /management are eligible to receive scholarship up to second degree subject to fulfillment of the certain conditions. i) An awardee is eligible for the scholarship provided he / she; (a) Takes up studies in approved courses. (b) Maintains good conduct as certified by the Head of the College/Institution. (c) Does not absent himself/herself without proper leave. (d) Takes up studies on a whole time basis. (ii) The awardee may accept. any other financial assistance or scholarship provided the awarding authority has no objection. (iii) The NCERT shall not be able to help the awardee in the admission to any Institution in India or abroad. This will be his/her personal responsibility. (iv) In case any awardee leaves his/her course of study within one month of the registration/admission, no scholarship shall be paid to him/her. (v) In case awardee is not able to appear at the examination due to serious illness, he/she should send the medical certificate, through the Head of the Institution, within one month of his/her falling ill. The duration of illness should be clearly certified by a Registered Medical Practitioner. (vi) The awardees have the option to change their discipline within one year after passing +2 stage. (vii) In case the awardee studies XI & XII or equivalent classes abroad his scholarship may be continued on his return to India at Degree level provided there is no break in his studies and his performance after classes XI and XII was up to the mark as required under rules for the awardees in India. However no scholarship shall be paid for the period of stay abroad. The rates of scholarship at different stages with effect from 1995-96 session are given below : Sl . Ph.D. stage (Four years) Rs 1,000 p.a. book grantRs 3,000 p.a. as contingency grant The procedure consists of a two-stage selection through: A. State level examination. B. National level examination. Each State/UT recommends a given number of candidates for the second level test to be conducted by the NCERT. This number is based on the enrolment of States/UTs at the secondary stage. The candidates are to be recommended on the basis of merit in the written examination The screening examination is normally conducted by the States/UTs during October-November each year. However, the exact date is advertised /published by respective State/UT at an appropriate time by the state agency nominated by the respective State/UT for the purpose. All students studying in Class X in any type of recognised school (including Kendriya Vidyalaya, Navodaya Vidyalaya) are eligible to appear at the State level examination from the State in which the institution is located. The eligibility for the state level NTS examination may be decided accordingly. The State may impose any other eligibility condition for appearing in the examination like qualifying percentage marks in the previous annual examination. NCERT conducts the second level written examination for the candidates sponsored by the States/UTs. The candidates having any query/complaints/clarification with regard to the State level examination shall have to correspond with the State examination agencies only. As National Talent Search scholarships are given for studies starting from Class XI, students who may have appeared in Class X annual examination latest by May of a particular year are eligible for appearing in the national level National Talent Search examination which is usually held on second Sunday of May every year. Thus those students who will be in Class XI in July of a particular year are eligible for taking the second level examination in the preceding May. Ravindra Nath Srivastava
