The Great Gatsby
(F. Scott Fitzgerald)
The Great Society that features in F. Scott Fitzgerald's book: The Great Gatsby has been the centre of many a discussion circle both in the UK and in Europe. These characters form an eternal triangle that is special inasmuch as readers even as young as 17 to 22 still enjoy the reading and retelling of this wonderful story. I suppose Gatsby the central character is most charming: an impeccable American millionaire whose riches are universally appealing: his charm, good looks and obvious success in the world of business attract him to the rich young ladies of his day: F. Scott Fitzgerald is talking about the JAZZ AGE IN AMERICA! In particular Daisy Buchanan is drawn to Jay Gatsby: his house intrigues her, and her husband Tom: their friends are collected around the table often found discussing Jay Gatsby: his background leaves much to be desired: they say he shot a man! But then he was also in the War: a hero we are led to believe: Much is made of Jay Gatsby's educational background: they say, Jay Gatsby was an Oxford Man: the assumption here is that he was educated at Oxford University in England! A great achievement in a British sense but often unvalued in America! Gatsby throws Big Parties and everybody loves attending them: The poor are included: rather what one might refer to as /the working class/ the mechanic around the corner and his cheap little wife are wooed by the Rich Set : much to their chagrin: they kill this poor little wife: she is /run down/ by their flashy car, they are a racy set: And the oppulence of their lifestyles are well described by F Scott Fitzgerald.: Jordan Baker, Daisy's friend and her cousin Nick occupy much of the reader's preoccupation with this rich set - in Jazz Age/America. The narrative glides along effortlesslly and its a thrill to read! In fact there is a DVD of The Great Gatsby available starring Mia Farrow as Daisy Buchanan and Robert Redford as Jay Gatsby! The end is fittingly tragic - I leave you to discover IT for yourselves!
