Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austen)
"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a large fortune must be in want of a wife" - so begins Jane Austen's romance of manners that swings from dislike to flirtation and back again like a waltz. The tale of Elizabeth Bennet and her romance with Mr Darcy that flows through active dislike, to mutual respect and great love is still a story which captivates not just its audience but even modern film makers and writers such as Helen Fielding and her creation Bridget take stock. So Elizabeth finds her Darcy eventually but her family try very hard to get in her way. Her mother, one of the most lively creations in literature, is desperate for Elizabeth's prettier sister to marry Darcy's friends, her younger sister insists on running away without getting married which threatens to put the whole family into disgrace and her older sister, the most beautiful of the family looks as though she may end up not getting married at all. With great irony, witty ripostes and wonderful comic characters such as Lady Catherine, Darcy's very snobby aunt and Mr Collins, her sycophantic cleric, Pride and Prejudice swings its readers into its saddle and doesn't let them go until the final page.
