Psalms
(The Bible)
In this, the second Psalm, the writer wonders why the heathen rage. Of a truth, all those who have delighted in God down the ages have always asked the same question. Why are godless people always so full of such volcanic hatred? We have all seen from history that people who do not know and serve the only true God are capable of violent uncontrollable anger. What is frightening is that in the heat of such rage these people have always attempted the impossible. They have always tried to subvert the purposes of God. It is surprising that certain powers believe they can silence God and then take over. Certainly, in most situations in our world, many in authority, that is, those who believe they are in charge, have always had one plan, knowingly or unknowingly; this is to subvert the plans and purposes of God for humanity. In a state of pique, these 'powers that be' do not only target God, they are also up in arms against the person through whom God is to bring to pass his purposes for mankind, the anointed of God. However, the most amazing thing here is the response of the Almighty to the satanically inspired hate campain. According to the Psalmist, the Lord chuckles as he surveys the futility of the plans and manoeuvring of his enemies. What these God-haters have refused to accept is that God is unconquerable and will ultimately achieve his purposes. The Lord will roar and his enemies will be worsted. Then the great Jehovah goes on to state his plans for the dispensation of the Messiah, the anointed, who will proceed out of Zion. It is this person, through whom God will bring his purposes for humanity to pass, who will have ultimate ownership and rulership. The inspired writer of this psalm then appeals to the 'powers that be' to lay down their arms and reconcile themselves to the fact that God is God and he will have the final say. The Almighty though will not rule out a reconciliation with these people provided they are prepared to embrace his plans and purposes. The alternative is utter destruction.
