Psalms
(The Bible)

Publicidade
The comparisons used in the first Psalm are apt. The writer compares the life of a godly man to a tree planted by the rivers of water while he compares that of an ungodly man to the chaff. There is no doubt that the tree planted by the rivers of water is a product of its environment. In this state, it receives the nourishment and all the other things it needs to remain fresh and productive. As long as it remains planted by the rivers of water, there is no fear of dryness. It flourishes, fulfilling its principal purpose which is to bear fruits.

In the same way, the godly man is a product of his environment. However, in his case the environment is spiritual. In essence the godly man is he who has chosen the only true God as his God, his refuge and his exceeding great gain. Automatically, this makes him a planting of the Lord. Invariably, he becomes a product of the choice he has made. It is not surprising that such a man is called blessed. However, being blessed here transcends material prosperity, it means allround prosperity, that is, spirit, soul and body. This man draws strength and spiritual nourishment from his God as long as he remains rooted in God. The godly man, because he has made the Almighty his choice, does not form close associations with people who do not know God so that he does not become spiritually infected. The most important thing to him is delighting himself in the things of God. As fruit-bearing comes naturally to a tree planted by the rivers of water so also would the life of a man rooted in God be an outpouring or outflow of goodness, kindness, faith, encouragement, valour and hope.

Sadly, the reverse is the case for the ungodly man. In any case, since he is not rooted in God, bearing good or godly fruit is alien to him. Such a man is compared to the chaff which, ultimately, is a worthless thing. Such a man is of no eternal value, both to himself and to others. He is easily won over to the course of evil. The good news is that, according to the writer, there will eventually be a final separation between the godly and the ungodly.
