Memoirs Of A Geisha
(Arthur Golden)

Publicidade
Memoirs of a Geisha is a masterfully written book filled with vivid imagery and beautiful writing. The story begins in the small fishing town of Yoroido, Japan and it is here where we meet our protagonist. Chiyo is a poor young girl living with her mother, father and sister, but when her mother takes ill her father must watch as they are each sold. Chiyo is sold to a geisha house in Gion, Japan. Chiyo, who has been kept in the dark about her future or even her reason for leaving her home soon finds herself immersed in a world filled with cruel beauty. She soon runs away in hope of finding her sister and returning to her small "tipsy" house in Yoroido, but fails and is punished harshly with life long sevitude. It isn't until Chiyo meets a kind man who drys away his tears with his handkerchief does she truly begin to believe that the world is filled with more than just cruelty. The book documents Chiyo's growth from a naive child to a beautiful well-kempt woman. The wide array of characters, from the vindictive Hatsumomo to the loveable chairman leaves the story bursting with a sense of realism that many others books have fallen far from. It is hard not to fall in love with this book.
