The Bomber
(Liza Marklund)
Crime novel The Bomber (original title: Sprängaren) starts the success story of Annika Bengtzon. Annika's creator, journalist from Stockholm, Liza Marklund, has made this persistently interfering crime reporter the most famous detective character of Sweden. No wonder that it is easy for Marklund to create crime novels in which afternoon paper and its editorial play such significant roles. She has herself worked as a head of a newsroom as well in the press as in the television. The main character Annika is trying to keep the balance between her career and home life. The work usually prevails over the home life, the latter being even too peaceful, so the husband very often watches the clock at home with two children. Annika is a workaholic and needs the recognition, so she always goes all out for the success in anything. The male personnel in the editorial get to know totally with whom they are dealing with. The reader is swept along with the intriguing turns of events so intensely that he/she feels feels like being on the spot. Marklund has placed her heroine in this first encounter to investigate a bomb explosion at the Olympic Stadium. She starts to investigate the incident in which an admired female journalist of the upcoming Olympics dies. Every now and then also Annika's own life is threatened in which situations every means is to be used. Every chapter of the book represents one day during which our reporter's life is very carefully followed. The book describes six days period of time as a whole. Marklund manages delicately to maintain the excitement to the last page.
