The Bonesetter's Daughter
(Amy Tan)
Have you ever wondered about your families past? In The Bonesetter's Daughter, Ruth, a "ghost writer," has never really questioned her ancestors lives. Her relationship with her mother is complicated. Ruth is a modern American woman, her mother, LuLing Young, is an older, Chinese woman who still believes in ghosts and curses. When LuLing's memory beings to fail her, Ruth takes her to see a doctor. The doctor asks her several questions. When asked her age, she claims she is eighty-one. Ruth becomes concerned because her mother is actually seventy-six. The diagnosis is Alzheimer's. After this, Ruth leaves her boyfriend to go stay with her mother. While in her mothers house, the house Ruth grew up in, she begins to unravel mysteries that shock her to the core. She finds a stack of papers written in Chinese by her mother. Curious, she hired a man to translate them for her. Through these papers, LuLing tells the tale of how her real mother, Precious Auntie, was the daughter of a famous bonesetter. After her beloved husband is killed by a jealous coffin maker on the day of their wedding, she is left pregnant and desperate. In an attempt to take her life, Precious Auntie swallows fire. She is saved by her family but is left mute, and with her face severely burned. When LuLing is born, she is handed over to her aunt. She grows up knowing this woman as her mother, and her real mother becomes her nurse maid. Through this, LuLing grows up intelligent, yet not as liked as her "sister" GaoLing. Eventually, LuLing is told she is to marry. The man she will marry is the son of the coffin maker who killed her real father. LuLing, not knowing this, announces the plans to Precious Auntie. She is heart broken and tries to tell LuLing the truth, but she will not listen, and leaves to marry the man. Soon, Precious Auntie kills herself. LuLing is sent to an orphanage run by American Christian women. While she is there, her sister finds her. She has married the man LuLing was meant to marry, and is completely miserable. While she is there, the Japanese invade China. LuLing's husband is taken and is killed not long after. The orphanage is destroyed, and everyone is forced to leave. She is separated from GaoLing once again. When they are reunited, the group from the orphanage must decide who will take on of the teachers, who has become severely ill, to America. After much discussion, it is decided that GaoLing will go, and once settled, she will send for LuLing. Time passes and no one sends for her. After much hard work on her part, and saving money, GaoLing sends her a letter from America telling her she found a pair of brothers. She will marry one and LuLing should marry the other but she should subtract five years from her age, just like GaoLing has done. The translation ends not long after, and Ruth is shocked to find her mother was not wrong when she stated her age. Knowing these things, Ruth begins to mend the relationship with her mother, and with her boyfriend. Her mother even find a boyfriend of her own, the man who had done the translation of her memoirs!
