The Brethren
(John Grisham)

Publicidade
Three ex-judges are serving time in Trumble, a minimum security federal prison. The bright trio, Spicer, Beech and Yarber, who call themselves ?The Brethren?, settle minor cases and disputes for the other inmates. They are running a blackmail scheme, where they first pretend to be young men in rehab and befriend affluent closeted gay men, by mail, and later threaten to expose them if they don?t pay up. A lawyer, Trevor, is hired as their contact to the outside and he shuttles their mail in and out of prison. Their plan is brilliant since their victims can?t complain to anyone and consequently, they can?t get caught. Things go smoothly until their net ensnares the wrong man, Aaron Lake, who is running for President and is backed by the CIA, no less. The CIA discovers their extortion scam and gets anxious about how to deal with them.
The story, funny at times, is very fast- paced and builds up to a splendid climax. Grisham proves that he is unquestionably, an incomparable master of thrillers.
