The Lovely Bones
(Alice Sebold)
The Lovely Bones is, essentially, a book about life seen through the eyes of a dead, fourteen year old girl, called Susie Salmon. One evening, after deciding to take a short cut home, Susie encounters Mr. Harvey, a quiet and ?friendly? neighbour, who asks her if she would like to come and see what he has built out in the cornfield. Although Susie thinks that this is strange, considering that it is snowing and starting to get dark, she endeavours to follow Mr. Harvey simply because he?s an adult and she thinks she should respect his authority. What Mr. Harvey has built, out in the cornfield, is an underground room; a cleverly contrived structure, an ideal place to rape and murder without being detected ? this is where Susie dies and her existence in heaven begins. The author presents the idea that Heaven is what ever the individual wishes their heaven to be and although Susie?s heaven, initially, consists of such things as ? school without teachers, art class as her sole reason for attending, ?Glamour? and ?Vogue? to be the only textbooks needed and ice-cream whenever she feels, her ultimate heaven would be to be alive and living with her family. The next best thing to this is watching them from where she is ? keeping a track of her mother, father, sister and small brother; all of whom see and feel Susie?s presence often. Susie meets with Holly, a girl who happened to arrive in heaven on the same day as she [Susie] did. They become roommates and subsequently, good friends due to their shared interests. Susie and Holly seem to share much the same heaven. Susie watches from heaven as her family deal with her death by detaching themselves from one another and muddling through in ?their own way?, with no real closure to Susie?s death ? no body to bury and only an elbow as proof that something nasty had happened to her. Sad that the she will never have the chance to grow up and acquaint herself with the things she is witnessing her sister experience, Susie shares her sisters life experiences in order to feel what it would be like to grow up ? to go to high school, share experiences with boys, wear make-up, graduate, get married and have children etc. Susie manages to break through the ?Inbetween? (a place she inhabits until she is truly ready to let go of life on earth) and becomes apparent in the body of someone else in order to experience life on earth, one last time. After her last experience on earth, Susie?s soul goes back to heaven but moves on from the ?Inbetween? and enters, what she calls ?wide wide heaven? ? a place she can feel truly at rest and let go of what she can never have back. After years of struggling with the fact that Susie is no longer with them in life, Susie?s family manage to become as one again, to accept that she is no longer physically with them ? only in thought. Mr. Harvey is never caught for Susie?s murder ? but that doesn?t mean that he lives a full and happy life! If you want to know Mr. Harvey?s fate, buy the book and read it ? it?s brilliant.
