Things Fall Apart
(Chinua Achebe)

Publicidade
Achebe?s Things Fall Apart is a distinctly postcolonial text that seeks to re-write the lost stories from pre-colonial Nigeria. The book represents a counter-narrative, detailing the society and culture that existed before the colonisers appeared. Achebe illustrates that the culture of the Igbo is far from the image of primitive savagery that has been cultivated in the West. However whilst we learn of the sophistication of the Igbo society and its intricacies relating to birth, marriage, sex, warfare, farming and death; its demise is not entirely attributed by the onslaught of the colonial oppressor. The main character, Okonkwo, is a hotheaded warrior who is unable to cope with changes to his society that occur after the arrival of Christian missionaries. His previously senior position in the society is undermined by his rejection of the encroaching Christian way of life. While the book shows the errors of generalising the pre-colonial tribes of Africa into groups of savages, it also indicates that it is Okonkwo?s inability to adapt to change that causes a demise in the ancient culture of the society.
